The annual Community Project Grant is made available through an agreement between the City and Waste Management to fund community projects and programs that benefit Simi Valley. Annual funding of up to $150,000 is available through this grant for local 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations in support of community projects and programs. The funding is disbursed at the recommendation of the Community Projects Grant (CPG) Review Committee (Review Committee) and final discretion of the City Council. Please review the upcoming meeting dates for the CPG Review Committee.
The application period for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018-19 closed on February 21, 2018. Submitted applications will be made available for public review at multiple public meetings held by the Review Committee on April 19, 2018 and May 3, 2018. All projects must be completed, and all funds expended, by June 30, 2019. Any unspent funding must be returned to the City. Community Projects Grant Application Workshop
A voluntary workshop is held annually, prior to the opening of each application period (typically in January). The workshop provides an overview of the application review process. Please review the FY 2018-19 workshop presentation for more information about the application process.
FY 2017-18 funding cycle a total of 34 funding requests were received. All awarded funding for FY 2017-18 must be spent by June 30, 2018. Additional information about the awarded agencies and the amount awarded can be found in the below table.

The Review Committee reviews funding requests from local 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for projects and programs serving the community and makes recommendations to the City Council for funding awards. The Review Committee consists of one representative from each of the four Neighborhood Councils, one representative from the Council on Aging, one representative from the Youth Council, one representative from the community, and alternates for each position. Representatives are nominated by their representing committee and are appointed by the City Council. Terms for the representatives end when the City Council awards the annual funding.
On April 19, 2018 the Review Committee met to receive an orientation about the program and the role of the Review Committee. Please review the orientation presentation for more information.
May 3, 2018 Review Committee Meeting
The 22 eligible organizations will be given an opportunity to present their funding requests to the Review Committee on May 3, 2018. Prior to this meeting the Review Committee members will review all funding requests based on the benefits and needs identified in each program or project on an individual basis.
Members of the public will be able to speak during the Public Statements/Comments period. The time allotted to each speaker under this section will be based upon the number of persons wishing to speak.
Each applicant will be allotted three minutes to present and should address the following items in their presentations:
• Community need, Community benefit/impact
• Number of people served
• Type of program/project (new, existing, capital project)
• New or previous recipient
• Percentage of the grant benefitting Simi Valley residents
• Sustainability or future benefit of the program/project.
Upon conclusion of the presentations, the Review Committee members will be able to ask follow up questions and then discuss the merits of the applications. The Review Committee will then identify the common rankings and use the discussion to narrow down to a final list recommended for funding.
The Review Committee’s recommendations will be presented to the City Council at one of its June 2018 meetings.
The May 3, 2018 Review Committee meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be located at the Simi Valley Public Library Community Room (2969 Tapo Canyon Road).
